Established in May 2009, the Institute for Cultural Industries (SICI) is the first multi-disciplinary research institution of Shenzhen University (SZU). Backed by the various colleges of the University related with cultural industries, SICI has attracted more than 50 researchers from the disciplines of art & design, communication, economics, management and law. It sets up five departments and several research centers, and the advisory board and academic committee are composed by government officials from the publicity department and the department of culture at local, provincial and national level, as well as prestigious scholars in cultural industries. Rooted in Shenzhen, its broad vision is to serve the development of Guangdong Province and other areas of China, and to become a hub of academic research, data bank and training in cultural industries. The mission of SICI is to “vigorously engage in research of cultural industries, serve local economic and social development, build a platform for academic exchanges and create a new featured think-tank”; along with the philosophy of “co-ownership, co-development, and sharing”. SICI has implemented a series of projects in academic research and decision consulting. Since its foundation, SICI has sponsored the activities of China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industries Fair (SZU Branch) in ten consecutive years. It is honored as a “Teaching and Training Base for Cultural Industries of Shenzhen”, a “Research Base for Cultural and Creative Industries of Shenzhen”, a “Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences at Universities of Guangdong Province”, and is elected as a vice-chairman unit of Cross-Strait Culture & Creative Industries Research Alliance, and the academic support unit of China Cultural Industry Cooperative (CIC). In 2010, SICI was rewarded a special grant by the central authorities for regional universities of China; from 2011 to 2018, SICI was granted 50 research projects by National Social Science Foundation in the categories of Key Project, Art Project and Youth Project, as well as by Ministry of Education of China, Guangdong Province and Shenzhen; in 2017, SICI was selected as the Training Base for the Talents of Cultural Industries and New Media in Guangdong Province, and was selected as one of the key think tanks in Guangdong; in 2019, SICI was selected as Representative Base for Joint-training Master Students of Guangdong Province.
